I especially liked Dimblethum, who is gentle, yet tough. I liked this book because it was very original with many interesting characters.
Once there things are revealed to Cara that she would rather never have known and things are done that would change her life forever. However, upon exiting they are taken to Firethroat's cave. To flee the pursuing Delvers, they must pass through Firethroat the dragon's territory to see Grimwold, the story recorder of the Unicorn Chronicles. The amulet must be brought to the Queen to keep it from the Delvers and Beloved, a young yet evil girl, who is trying to slay the unicorns. Together, they travel across Luster to deliver the amulet and her grandmother's message. There, she meets the Dimblethum,(a man-bear), Lightfoot, (a young, rather spunky unicorn), the Squijum, (an annoying creature that is somewhat a cross between a squirrel and a monkey), and Thomas the Tinker. Christopher's into Luster the land of the unicorns. While a man is pursuing her, she is forced to jump off St. Recommended.Have you ever thought about throwing yourself off a building with a special amulet in hand, leaving your grandmother behind in danger while you travel into another world? I bet Cara, a 14-year-old orphaned girl, never thought about it either, but that is exactly what happened to her.
It's a great children's adventure, and Cara is a very believable young girl, brave and smart and quite believably scared by some of the things she encounters and experiences. Along the way, she meets Grimwold the dwarf and recorder of unicorn stories, Thomas the Tinker who can fix almost anything and has a truly impressive wagon, and Firethroat the dragon. He's after the necklace, or rather amulet, that her grandmother gave her, and wants to use it to bring other hunters-other unicorn hunters-to Luster to wipe out the unicorns.Ĭara needs to reach the Queen of the unicorns, to bring a message from her grandmother, and to keep the amulet safe. Unfortunately, the hunter who was following her and her grandmother has also managed to follow her across, and nasty creatures called Delvers are helping him hunt her. Luster is a magical place, and she meets magical, wonderful creatures, especially the unicorn, Lightfoot, and Dimblethum, a hairy creature who looks to be somewhere between a man and a bear. She does it, and finds herself in a magical new world. It's not long before Cara, wearing her grandmother's special necklace, is standing at the top of a bell tower, about to follow Grandma's instructions to wait for the the twelfth toll of the bell, call out "Luster, bring me home," and jump. Cara is surprised and frightened when her grandmother agrees they are really being followed-and that the man is a threat. Cara and her grandmother, whom she has lived with since her mother died and her father left, are on their way home from the library when they realize they are being followed.
